Newton School District has participated in the Topeka Model United Nations experience since 1988.
Model United Nations is a unique educational experience. Through placing delegates in an elaborate simulation in the format of the United Nations, an atmosphere is created where learning occurs with the direct experience. Each student is called upon to react, argue, negotiate, temporize, make decisions, compromise, fail and succeed. Everybody must think.
Through this model, students gain insight into the structure and task of the UN. They learn what is possible and what isn't, why the UN succeeds and why it fails. The complexities of international affairs become more understandable when experienced first hand. Parliamentary procedure and debate tactics are utilized. Most importantly, students learn to think globally. An awareness and appreciation for other cultures is deepened.
