Copying Your Documents
to
the H: Drive
In order to assure that your valueable data does not disappear the next time your computer has a hardware or software problem, it is imperative that it be placed on the server. Your secure, private space on the server is your “H: drive”. Saving or copying files to this location can be done in several different ways, which we will cover below. Because several different methods are described within this literature, we suggest that you read through these instructions fully first, then use them as a reference if needed.

The “My Documents” folder is the most common place where people store their documents. We will use this as an example, but this technique can be used anywhere you have your documents saved.

NOW DOUBLE-CLICK THE “MY
DOCUMENTS” FOLDER TO OPEN IT.

Once the “My Documents” window is open, your documents and folders within it are ready to be selected. The example above shows 3 files, which can be selected a number of ways. The “lasso” method is one of the most popular, and is shown in the next illustration.

To “lasso” files and folders, simply CLICK AND HOLD THE LEFT MOUSE BUTTON (this anchors one corner of the rope) and DRAG A SELECTION BOX AROUND THE FILES THAT YOU WISH TO SELECT. When the lasso surrounds all of the files you wish to select, then simply release the left mouse button and the files will stay selected.
If you wish to select files one at a time, simply hold down the “ctrl” key while left clicking on individual files. REMEMBER: It is important to copy only documents and not software programs.

To copy the selected files, RIGHT CLICK ON ONE OF THE SELECTED FILES WITHIN THE WINDOW. A drop down menu will appear. LEFT CLICK ON “COPY”.

The next step is to transfer the copied files to your H:
drive. First, we will open the
“My Computer” window. DOUBLE CLICK THE “MY COMPUTER” ICON IN THE UPPER LEFT
CORNER OF THE SCREEN.

Once the “My Computer” window is open, your available drives within it will be visible. The example above shows a user with the logon name of “Tsmith” logged on at Northridge. Your “H:” drive is named in the same fashion as the one inidicated by the red arrow in the illustration above.
The “H:” drive is named like this… “Username” on “Server”\Data\Home (H:)
The example… “Tsmith” on ‘Ursa’\Data\Home (H:)
TO OPEN YOUR H: DRIVE, DOUBLE
CLICK THE ICON.

Once your “H: Drive” window is open, it may look like the one pictured above. There is no cause for concern if more files and folders are present…..that simply indicates that data has been archived here before. It is important to note that the space on your H: drive is not endless….if you see old and unused files there, please remove them. NOTE: DO NOT REMOVE THE FOLDER NAMED “PMAIL”.

You are now ready to transfer the files to your “H: Drive” To paste the files, RIGHT CLICK WITHIN THE WINDOW. A drop down menu will appear. LEFT CLICK ON “PASTE”.

The files will now be copied to your “H: Drive”. If there are a number of files to copy, a progress meter may appear to let you know how much longer the process may take. Once they have been copied, they will appear in the window. The example above shows that our three files are now present on our “H: Drive”. Thanks for using this valuable resource and happy archiving!
