Sunset Prairie Restoration Project

Volunteer Duane Friesen helps Lupita Rivera Puentes install a plant in Sunset Elementary's new Prairie Restoration garden.

Students at Sunset Elementary School were able to realize their dream of creating a little piece of prairie in their own back yard, recently.

The Prairie Restoration project was made possible thanks to a $1,000 grant from Walmart to purchase plants and planting materials. Staff from Dyck Arboretum of the Plains provided technical assistance to help install the plants, and several parents and Arboretum volunteers assisted the children with the planting. The project was initiated by 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade classes at Sunset and came to fruition on a beautiful fall day in October.

Sunset students and staff are looking forward to observing the plants as they bloom and spread throughout the three prairie garden areas in the months to come.
