The ever popular treat, the ice-cream cone, turned 104 on September 22. South Breeze first graders, always up for helping a friend celebrate a birthday, commemorated the auspicious event with an ice cream cone party at Dairy Queen. The ice cream cone was invented by the Italian immigrant Italo Marchiony in 1903 in New York City. Although Marchiony is credited with the invention of the cone, a similar creation was independently introduced at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.

KSN News Visits Walton
Walton Rural Life Center featured on KSN News The Walton 21st Century Rural Life Center was recently featured on the KSN Channel 3 Morning News. KSN reporter and anchor, Stephanie Bergmann, paid a visit to Walton last week, to tour the school and visit with staff and students there.

Bergmann spent about two hours conducting interviews and filming footage of the students during the normal course of the school day. The resulting feature story, which aired on the morning and noon newscasts Friday, highlighted some of the new and exciting activities incorporated into the curriculum at Walton since becoming a rural life charter school this year. The story showed children making homemade salsa, tending the school vegetable garden and greenhouse plants, and feeding the resident goat, Petey.

The Walton 21st Century Rural Life Center is a newly designated charter school, which offers its students the opportunity to master standardized educational skills, utilizing practical agricultural themes and applications, integrated with the latest technology.

Gift Basket Auction to Benefit Education Endowment

The annual NCHF-USD 373 Education Endowment Gift Basket Auction will be held on Friday, September 21, during the Newton High School Homecoming varsity football game vs. Ark City.

Several themed gift baskets, brimming with useful, fun items have been donated by local businesses, parents, school staff, and community members, and will be auctioned off during the first half of the game.

Bids will be accepted until the end of half time and basket winners will be announced at the end of the third quarter. All proceeds from the gift basket auction benefit the NCHF USD 373 Education Endowment, which provides grants to help Newton teachers bring academic programs and enrichment activities into their classrooms that would otherwise be beyond the budget constraints of the district.

The USD 373 Endowment Fund, in partnership with the Greater Newton Community Foundation, has been supporting students and teachers since 1999.
