USD 373 Pandemic Flu plan
The purpose of the Pandemic Preparedness Plan is to assist Newton schools and their families manage the impact of pandemic illness in our community. The plan is based on two main goals.
1) Reduce the spread of illness within school facilities.
2) Sustain educational functions to the fullest extent possible.
The following action steps are designed to achieve the two stated goals.
1. Schools will remain open - USD 373 schools will remain open until such time as absenteeism reaches a level that BOE goals can not reasonably be met. The Superintendent will make the decision whether or not to close school.
2. Hand sanitizers installed – Hand sanitizers have been and will continue to be strategically placed in our schools.
3. Thoroughly clean all surfaces – Custodial crews will sanitize all surfaces regularly touched by students and staff.
4. Monitor health - Staff members and parents of students will monitor student health. Look for symptoms of influenza-like illness. If symptoms are present,
DO NOT go to school!
5. Practice good hygiene - Students and staff are taught to cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Wash hands well and/or use hand sanitizer frequently.

6. Limit contact - Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Students and staff who present influenza-like symptoms (fever, body aches, tired) will be isolated promptly in a supervised room separated from other students and staff until they can go home.
7. Stay home while ill - Students and staff are to stay home when sick. The CDC recommends that those with flu-like illness stay home at least 24 hours after their fever is gone, without using fever-reducing medications.
