Health Guidelines
Notify the school nurse if your child has chronic health conditions such as: asthma, food allergies, diabetes, seizure disorder, or requires medication on a regular basis.
It is imperative that school personnel be able to reach you if your child becomes ill or injured. Please be sure that your emergency phone numbers and contacts are up to date and accurate.
Keep your child at home if they are running a fever of 99.6 or above or have vomited in the past 8 hours. Your child may return to school after being fever free for 24 hours without the use of anti-fever medication.
Students diagnosed with contagious conditions such as, “pink eye” or strep throat, may return to school after 24 hours of prescribed antibiotic treatment.
A student identified as having head lice will be sent home with instructions for treating the student and the environment. The student will be allowed to return to class upon inspection by the school nurse or a person designated by the nurse. For specific guidelines please refer to the U.S.D. # 373 web-site www.newton.k12.ks.us at the Health and Wellness link.
Students whose immunizations are not current will not be allowed to attend school. If you have questions, please see your school nurse, or refer to the U.S.D. # 373 web-site.
Every student who is 8 years of age or under is required to have a health assessment completed within 90 days of enrolling in a Kansas school for the first time.
Medication may be administered to students at school with the following requirements:
- A written statement from the physician must be provided to verify that it is necessary to give prescription medication during school hours. This must also be signed and dated by the parent/guardian
- The prescription medication container must have a pharmacy label with the student’s name, the name of the medication, the time of day it is to be given, and the physician’s name.
- Non-prescription medication must be in the original container with the student’s name accompanied by written permission from the parent/guardian.
- The first dose must be given at home prior to bringing it to school in case there is an allergic reaction to the medication.
Vision screening will be completed for K, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, & 11 and hearing screening will be completed for K, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, & 11. You will be notified if your child is in need of further evaluation. (4-07)
