EXTRA! EXTRA!
Read all about it!
2008 Kansas Reading Circle Selection,
2008 Kansas Notable Book, and 2009-2010 William Allen White Awards master list
Who? Long-time educator and school librarian Beverley Olson Buller
What? The first-ever juvenile biography of beloved Kansas newspaper editor William Allen White
When? September 2007
Where? All over Kansas!
Why? Because Kansas kids know about the William Allen White Children's Book Award, but there's never been a book about its namesake that is kid-friendly. Also, because teachers need books that provide examples of primary sources and various text features.
How? This book was written after the author read many secondary sources (including all the previously-published biographies) and consulted many primary sources (such as William Allen White's autobiography, letters, and oral histories of people who knew him). Visiting Emporia, El Dorado, and Moraine Park, Colorado, where the White family had homes provided more insight. The final step in the process involved carefully selecting primary sources such as old postcards, photos, and even grade cards to make the text more meaningful. Because the family of William Allen White gave permission, the book allows him to "speak" to the reader through quotations from his autobiography and his many Gazette editorials.
