Homework Policy

Homework Policy

Homework is an essential part of the school program at CMS. The quality and quantity of the homework assignment will vary and relate to the content of classroom instruction and shall supplement its purpose and objectives   We do not believe in allowing students the choice to fail.

Guidelines for Students:

Assignments should be clearly understood before leaving class.

Students are required to hand in assignments in a timely manner.

Students are to assume responsibility for obtaining the proper resources and materials.

Guidelines for Parents:

Parents should be familiar with and support the philosophy and guidelines of our homework policy.

Parents should provide the child with a time and place to carry out the homework assignments.

Parents should contact the teacher/school in the event of questions or concerns.

Parents should take an active part in the supervision of the student completing the assignment.

Assignments will be marked 50% off when not handed in at the time they are due.  The final deadline for any late assignments is the end of the current unit/chapter of study.  Once a unit has been concluded, assignments from that unit will not be accepted for credit.

It is understood that even the most responsible students make mistakes, so students will be given one "Oops Pass" per core class for each quarter.  This pass will allow students to receive full credit for one late assignment in each of his/her core classes (Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and CRT).  To receive full credit, the pass must be attached to the assignment when it is handed in and turned in before the end of the unit/chapter of study.  Full credit will be refused to students attaching passes that are not complete (for example, a pass where the original class name has been torn off).

Following an excused absence, all students are allowed two calendar days to complete assigned work for the first day absent, and one calendar day for each subsequent day of absence.  For example, if a student misses school on Tuesday, then returns on Wednesday, all work must be turned in by Friday.  Students are responsible to ask for the work they have missed or to comply with individual teacher expectations to collect work or get questions answered if they miss the initial instruction.

Students that are absent due to extra-curricular activities are responsible for getting their homework prior to being absent and turning it in on time, or per teacher’s instructions.

In cases of extended absences for reasons including, but not limited to, vacations, illnesses, etc., students may be required to stay before/after school to make up missed assignments.  Extracurricular activities (contests, games, and practices) may be missed until the work is completed or arrangements with teachers have been made.  Please consider this when making arrangements which require your student to miss an extended number of school days.
