Department strives to prepare students in a variety of
business related career, interests, and skills: business
law, computer technology, accounting, marketing,
programming, and personal finance.

Business Course Descriptions
Intro to Computers
Prerequisite: None
This semester course is designed for the student who wants
to learn or improve their keyboarding technique. Students
will develop speed and accuracy as they learn to produce
personal and business documents such as letters, memos,
reports, tables, and job-related documents. It will also
include introductory units in Word, Excel, Access, and
PowerPoint. This is a required course for all computer
classes.
Computer Technology
Prerequisite: Intro to Computers
This full year class will consist of computer concepts,
word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation
skills. Units are also included in E-mail, Internet and
social/ethical issues in computing. This is a required
course for graduation and is a prerequisite to all other
computer applications classes. Computer Technology will
fulfill the Computer Technology Proficiencies requirement
to be admitted to any Kansas Regents University. This
course is a designated Tech Prep course through Hutchinson
Community College. Completion of this course with an “A”
or “B” means you have earned college credit to be used
toward an Associate of Applied Science Degree with
Hutchinson Community College.
Computer Technology - Zero
Hour
Prerequisite: Intro to Computers
Same as previous Computer Technology except
this course is offered "zero" hour, meeting every day
7:00 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. This course would be taken in
addition to a regular 8-hour schedule. Zero classes have
the same attendance requirements as do all other classes.
Desktop Publishing
Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in Computer
Technology
This semester class is designed for the student who wants
to learn how to create newsletters, brochures,
advertisements, flyers, various business forms and mailing
forms.
Web Page Design
Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in Computer
Technology
This semester class is designed for students who want to
learn how to design and create a web page through the use
of FrontPage 2002 and HTML.
Web Support
Prerequisite – Web Page Design with a grade of C
or higher
This
year long course is for students who are interested in
developing and updating the Newton High School website.

Computer Applications in Business
Prerequisite – Computer Technology
This semester course is designed to introduce students to
the many uses of computers and allow students to explore
new technologies. Areas of exploration will be video
technology, graphics, animation technology, and electronic
presentations. After sufficient introduction to these new
technologies, students will be given opportunities to
prepare computer-aided presentations utilizing these
varied technologies.
Accounting I
Prerequisite: Computer Technology
This course teaches the fundamental accounting cycle for
two types of businesses. The student learns how to operate
a service business such as a gift shop organized by one
owner. The second business that students learn is the
organization of a merchandising business as a partnership
such as a sporting goods store or an auto parts store.
Other topics included are careers, checking accounts,
small business management, and payroll records. This
course is a designated Tech Prep course through Hutchinson
Community College. Completion of this course with an “A”
or “B” means you have earned college credit to be used
toward an Associate of Applied Science Degree with
Hutchinson Community College.
Computerized Accounting II
Prerequisite: Average grade of C or better in
Accounting I
This course presents a greater emphasis on the three forms
of business ownership: sole owner, partnership, and
corporations. Departmentalized merchandising businesses
and manufacturing businesses are studied. Management and
Cost Accounting are explored as well.
Jr Tech Support
Prerequisite: Computer Technology (Application Only)
This course is for students in their first year of
training in computer technical support. Students will be
under the guidance of USD #373’s technicians and a
classroom teacher, assisting them with a variety of
computer/technology related tasks. Students will be
problem solvers and will travel to selected schools
throughout the district. Students will maintain a notebook
documenting their computer tasks. These tasks will include
both software and hardware problems.
Jr. (IHT) Tech Support
Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Jr. Tech
Support
This course is taken in conjunction with the Jr. Tech
Support course listed above. This year long course is a
continuation of technical support services offered to USD
373 during the school day.
Sr. Tech Support
Pre-requisite – Jr. Tech Support
This course is for advanced students who have completed
the Jr. Tech Support program. Students will serve as
mentors to students in the Jr. Tech Support class. They
will continue to be problem solvers, travel to schools
throughout the district and maintain documentation and
records of technological equipment and repairs.
Sr. (IHT) Tech Support
Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in
Sr. Tech Support
This course is taken in conjunction with the Sr. Tech
Support course listed above. This year long course is a
continuation of technical support services offered to USD
373 during the school day

Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in Geometry and
Computer Technology
This semester course is designed for the student who wants
to learn how to create basic windows programs using Visual
Basic software.
Computer Programming
Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in Intro to
Computer Programming
The student will study computer systems, top down
Programming , data types and structure. The programming
language used will be VisualBasic.net
Personal Finance
Prerequisite: None
The study of Personal Finance involves learning
skills to develop positive financial habits. Activities
encourage the development of skills in the areas of career
choice, budgeting, checking and savings accounts, credit,
insurance and taxes. Emphasis is placed on long-term
financial planning.
Business Law
Prerequisite: None
Business law provides an opportunity to explore
the history of law, understand our judicial system, and
identify legal rights. Most cases studied are Kansas
cases, and various legal careers are explored. The course
includes several outside speakers, and a mock trial is
held at the end of the course.
Jr. Business Technology
Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in Computer
Technology
This course is offered to students who wish to
pursue additional skills in the office occupations field.
It introduces students to Web Page Design, Desktop
Publishing, integrates computer skills, general office
skills, business communications, office ethics and
etiquette. This is the lead-in course for Business &
Computer Technology.
Business & Computer Technology
Prerequisite: Computer Technology (By Application
Only)
This course is designed for students interested in
business office jobs. Students work in a business-related
job and participate in BPA club activities. Students learn
records management, business communications, business
mathematics, calendaring, document production, human
relations skills, career development skills, leadership
skills, and how to perform basic financial functions. Jr.
Business Technology and Accounting are highly recommended.
Students must also enroll in Business & Computer
Technology (OJT).
Business & Computer Technology (OJT)
Prerequisite: Current enrollment in Business &
Computer Technology
Taken in conjunction with Business & Computer
Technology, this course is designed to give students the
opportunity to learn by practical experience through
employment. Students may be released from school in the
afternoon to work in local businesses, applying what they
have learned and acquiring knowledge in a real work
setting. Employers, students, and the program coordinator
work as a team to maximize students’ opportunities to
develop lifelong skills, work ethic, and attitudes.
Marketing I
Prerequisite: None
In this introductory course, students learn about
the expanding field of marketing, marketing careers,
promotion, ethics, and product development. Other skill
areas include handling money and sales transactions,
creating displays, merchandising procedures, and
shoplifting prevention techniques. Marketing I provides
the knowledge, attitudes, and general business background
to be successful in a marketing career in our free
enterprise system. Students will be introduced to DECA and
have the opportunity to participate in DECA.
Marketing II
Prerequisite: Marketing I (Application Only)
This course is an advanced study of marketing and
business management. Students have the opportunity to work
in a marketing-related job, and participate in DECA Club
activities. Course work includes sales, advertising,
market research, human relations, leadership skills,
E-Commerce, and sport marketing. Students must also
Enroll in Marketing (OJT). This is a designated Tech
Prep course. Completion of Marketing I and II means you
have earned college credit to be applied toward an
Associate of Applied Science degree at Hutchinson
Community College.
Marketing (OJT)
Prerequisite: Current enrollment in Marketing II
In Marketing On-The-Job Training, students are
released from school in the afternoon to work in local
businesses where they have the opportunity to apply
classroom learning to their jobs, and gain valuable work
experience. The program coordinator and employers work
together to assist students in developing positive work
skills, ethics, and attitudes. A long-term job reference
is also a main course goal.
Entrepreneurship YEK
Prerequisite: None
This course is designed to develop student skills,
creativity, leadership skills to start their own business.
Students will develop these skills through a hands on
classroom experience and contact with actual business
owners. Students are required to write a competitive
workable business plan.
NEW COURSE OFFERING FOR 2006-07
Small Business Management
Prerequisite: YEK (Application Only)
Students will participate in interactive instruction
and will develop communication, research and problem
solving skills as they relate to business. Learning is
focused on applied entrepreneurial opportunities and
careers as well as all aspects of the operation/management
of small businesses. The format of this class promotes a
strong community link, and students will spend time
working directly with community mentors. Additionally,
students will actively participate in the operation of an
in-school business. Research, develop, write and present a
workable business plan.
