English Language Learners

ELL is the abbreviation for English Language Learners. Occasionally this
service is referred to as Limited English Proficiency or English as a Second
Language.
The ELL program at NHS serves the student population that is non or limited
English speaking. These students are approximately 13-18 years old. The have
moved to the United States within the last three years. Most of the students are
from Mexico. All of them are Spanish speaking. There are currently 15 high
school students who are enrolled in the ELL class (2003-04). In addition, there
are five more students who have "graduated" from the ELL class and are being
closely monitored for success in the regular classes.
The ELL students are NHS face academic content that is overwhelming given
their lack of English proficiency. In addition, they experience "educational
culture" shock as they sit in classrooms with different types of assignments
(What is a portfolio?) and student behavior (Should I stand up when I'm called
on?) and teacher expectations (I have to write full sentences to explain my
answer in MATH class?!)
Initially, the students are tested to determine their English proficiency.
They are immediately placed in a specially designed English class to develop
their English reading, writing, and speaking skills. In addition, they attend a
"Native Speakers Spanish" class to maintain and improve their Spanish literacy
skills. Although the ELL students are "clustered" in their core classes (math
and science) so that a bilingual paraprofessional can assist them, the ELL
students are generally integrated in with the regular students. In addition, the
ELL classroom is open before school each day so that students can come early to
receive homework assistance or have extra time to finish tests or class work.
After students "graduate" from ELL class, they continue to receive assistance
such as extra tutorials, modified test, and other supports to ensure success.
