The NHS World Languages department strives to teach the National Foreign Language Standards that include:
Communication-  Communicate in languages other than English.
Cultures- Gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures.
Connections- Connect with other disciplines and acquire information.
Comparisons- Develop insight into the nature of language and culture.
Communities- Participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world.

World Languages Course Descriptions

French I:       Prerequisite – None   
This course acquaints the student with the sounds, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and culture of the language. Besides learning basic conversational and writing skills, the student will be exposed to the geography, music customs, history and art of the county. Workbook $14.00.

French II:      Prerequisite – French I
This course maintains the development of oral competence and grammar with more emphasis on reading and writing. Using their reading ability, students become more aware of the characteristics and attitudes of French and Francophone cultures. Workbook  $14.00.

French III:      Prerequisite – French II           
This course continues to increase the student’s ability to converse and express himself orally and through writing. Students become aware of the cultural characteristics of the people whose language they are studying. More emphasis is placed on reading and discussion of written material. French Art, especially the Impressionist movement, will be introduced and studied. Workbook $14.00.

French IV:      Prerequisite – French III
This course stresses the application of language skills acquired during the three previous years. While grammar is still emphasized, exposure to history and various works of literature is the major goal. Workbook  $14.00.

French V:    Prerequisite – French IV
This course builds upon previous French studies, focusing on advanced grammar skills and the Literature of Francophone countries. It will be taught in combination with French IV.

German I:      Prerequisite – None
This course provides a good foundation for further study in the language. It presents the basic structure and grammar of the German language and the development of a functional German vocabulary. Conversation and writing are stressed and some aspects of German culture are introduced.

German II:      Prerequisite – German I
This course provides a continued study in the structure and grammar of the German language. Conversation and writing are stressed and the students are introduced to some areas of German Literature.

German III:       Prerequisite – German II            
This course continues to develop the students’ abilities in speaking and writing as well as explore further the areas of German culture, including history, literature, music and art.

German IV:
     Prerequisite – German III
This course is individualized toward the student’s need in advanced language study. The students set goals of language improvement.

German V:       Prerequisite – German IV
This course is individualized toward the students need in advanced language study. The students set goals of language improvement and work is primarily self-directed. Focus areas will be grammar, literature, and topics of interest to the students. Will meet at the same time as German IV.

Spanish I:
      Prerequisite – None
This course acquaints the student with basic Spanish grammar, sounds, pronunciation, vocabulary and culture of the language. Besides learning basic conversational skills, the student is exposed to the geography, music, customs, history and art of Spanish speaking countries. Workbook $14.00.


Spanish II:
      Prerequisite – Spanish I
This course maintains the development of oral competence and grammar with more emphasis on reading and writing. Using their reading ability, students become more aware of the characteristics and attitudes of Hispanic cultures. Workbook  $14.00.


Spanish III:
     Prerequisite – Spanish II
This course continues to increase the student’s ability to converse. The student does a thorough grammar review. In addition to language skills, the student is made aware of the cultural characteristics of Spanish speaking countries. Reading and writing skills will also be emphasized. Mexican Art and literature and Argentine culture will be a focus.  Workbook $14.00.

Spanish IV:     Prerequisite – Spanish III
Students in this course demonstrate increasing proficiency in language skills. Speaking skills begin to reflect increasing accuracy with respect to grammar and pronunciation and are augmented and sustained by the development of reading and writing skills. Exposure to a variety of genres of Spanish literature is a goal. Spanish art and culture will be a focus.  Workbook $14.00.


Spanish V:
     
Prerequisite – Spanish IV
The course will stress the application of language skills acquired during the four previous years. Emphasis will be on: reading, literature, and writing. Class will be largely independent and meet during Spanish IV.

Spanish for Native Speakers:
     Prerequisite – Native Speaker
This course is designed for students who speak Spanish in the home. The class is conducted in Spanish. It covers Spanish spelling, language use, writing organization and is designed to increase student’s knowledge of Latin American literature and culture. Students may take this class twice, completing Levels I and II.
