Mathematics Course Descriptions

Applied Math I     Prerequisite: Algebra I

Applied Mathematics uses a set of modular learning materials designed to prepare high school vocational students in developing job-related mathematics skills. A Scientific calculator is required.

Algebra I     Prerequisite: None

Algebra I uses multiple representations (graphical, numerical, and analytical) as settings for work with linear expressions, algebraic fractions, exponential expressions, functions, and statistics with applications.. A Scientific calculator is required. A Graphics calculator is optional: (TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-83 Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Silver Edition).

Geometry     Prerequisite: Algebra I

Geometry is the study of visual patterns and geometric properties, transformations, and proof, and right triangle trigonometry. The content uses multiple representations integrated with algebraic concepts. A Scientific calculator is required. A Graphics calculator is optional: (TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-83 Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Silver Edition).

Advanced Geometry     Prerequisite: Algebra I

This course is similar in scope to Geometry. Content will be greater in depth and rigor and will include selected topics from the Carnegie Cognitive Tutor curriculum. Multiple representations integrated with algebraic concepts will be used. Greater emphasis will be placed on applications and multiple step problems. Students enrolled in this course should have above average mathematical problem—solving skills. A Graphics calculator is optional: (TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-83 Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Silver Edition).

Algebra II     Prerequisite: Geometry

Algebra II is a course recommended for college bound students. Multiple representations are used as settings for work with number properties, graphs, expressions, equations, inequalities, algebraic fractions, functions, and trigonometry. A Graphics calculator is required: (TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-83 Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Silver Edition).

Advanced Algebra II     Prerequisite: Geometry

This course is similar is scope to Algebra II. Content will be greater in depth and rigor and will include selected topics from the Carnegie Cognitive Tutor curriculum. Multiple representations integrated with geometric concepts and statistical applications will be used. Greater emphasis will be placed on applications and multiple step problems. Additional topics covered in this course include: Matrices, sequence and series, binomial theorem, conic sections and trigonometry. Students enrolled in this course should have strong mathematical and problem—solving skills. A graphics calculator is required for this course (TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-83 Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Silver Edition).

FST (Functions, Statistics, & Trigonometry)     Prerequisite: Algebra II

Function, Statistics and Trigonometry integrates statistical and algebraic concepts. Multiple representations are used as settings for work with number properties, graphs, equations, sequence, series, trigonometry, and functions. A Graphics calculator is required: (TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-83 Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Silver Edition).

Advanced Placement Calculus
     Prerequisite: FST

Topics to be studied include elementary functions, limits, differential calculus and integral calculus. Students will be eligible to take the Advanced Placement AB Calculus Exam for possible college credit. This full year course will approximate the first semester calculus course at the college level. A Graphics calculator is required: (TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-83 Silver Edition, TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Silver Edition).

Math Lab
Prerequisite: "Unsatisfactory" on the Kansas Math Assessment

This course is designed for students scoring “unsatisfactory” on the Kansas Math Assessment or whose math skills indicate they may have trouble meeting those standards. The school counselor will place students who qualify for this course. Students in this class are also enrolled in Algebra 1 during this semester. This course is offered as an elective credit, not a math credit. Students will need to complete 2 or 3 other math courses to meet the graduation requirements. A scientific calculator is required.

Math Tutor     Prerequisite: None (Application Only)

Students will provide peer tutoring for Algebra 1 students on homework, skills review, and computer units. The Math Department will notify those students selected for the program. This will class will be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
