Clubs
ART CLUB - R. Olais/ P. Olais (1st Club Period - Class Enrollment Required)The Art Club is a chance to be introduced to other fields of art. We will have the opportunity to listen and interact with guest artists of the community, field trips to local museums or galleries, and studios are funded through various fundraising activities. The club will also be available for community projects such as murals, contests, and art jobs. Prerequisite is enrollment in an art class. A paper is required to join art club.
AZTECA CLUB - P. Olais/ C. Sanhueza/ R. Olais (2nd Club Period - Choice)The objective of the Azteca Club is to promote awareness of the Hispanic community. Members will examine contemporary and historical issues through programs, speakers, and other activities. The club will also participate in traditions and customs during the meetings and at out of school events. Members may choose to participate in the dance troupe when positions are available. Prerequisite: You must be an active member to retain your membership. A paper is required to join the club.
CHEERLEADERS - (Try-out)Cheerleading is restricted to those who have been selected. Tryouts are usually held in April each year. Two squads, JV and Varsity, work together to support our sports program. Cheerleaders meet three mornings a week at 6:45 a.m. and are involved in all aspects of raising school spirit.
CHESS CLUB - (2nd Club Period - Choice)Chess Club is for those students who enjoy playing a challenging game of chess with other members of the club. Meetings are held during the second period of each month during Activity Period.
CLUB DE ESPANOL Spanish Club - Gregg/ Sanhueza/ Loeffler (1st Club Period - Class Enrollment Required)Club de Espanol is available to students who are currently enrolled in Spanish or have taken one year of Spanish. In Club de Espanol students participate in various activities, which emphasize Hispanic culture and customs, such as the celebration of Dia de los Muertos, Christmas posadas, or Cinco de Mayo.
DECA - (2nd Club Period - Class Enrollment Required)DECA is a business and marketing club connected with the Marketing Education program. Any student who is enrolled in Marketing II is an automatic member of the club. Members participate in community service projects, social activities, and fund-raising projects. Membership into the program is by application form the instructor and is during our class time.
DELTA EPSILON PHI - German Honor Society - Bergen (Meets as needed - Selected)This society is a selected group of students in third and fourth year German. Students are inducted according to German G.P.A. and overall G.P.A. This group forms the core of the Deutscher Verein leadership
DEUTSCHER VEREIN - German Club - Bergen (2nd Club Period - Class Enrollment Required)The German Club is available to students who are currently enrolled in or have taken at least one year of German. Membership in German Club permits students to participate in such activities as a Christmas party and celebrations of special holidays and events typical of German-speaking countries.
DRAMA CLUB - Conley (1st Club Period - Choice)Drama Club is an organization for members of the International Thespian Society, an international honor society in dramatics. Students who are not yet members of the International Thespian Society may attend the club if they participate in theatre productions at Newton High School and are interested in acting and technical theatre activities. Members participate in fund-raising, community service, and social events. The state conference in January is the highlight of the year.
FCA - George (1st Club Period - Choice)Fellowship of Christian Athletes is for athletes and those interested in athletics. FCA club activities are planned by student leaders and may include playing games, listening to speakers, singing with a student-led worship band, and discussing a variety of Christian values. Other activities are open to suggestion.
FCCLA - Jeffrey (1st Club Period - Choice)FCCLA (Family Career Community Leaders of America) is a national organization that encourages personal growth, leadership development, and family and community involvement. This club offers members the opportunity to meet and work with other teens at local, district, and state meetings. A variety of chapter activities are planned to meet the interest for members including social and service events.
FEA - Sauerwein/ Helberg (1st Club Period - Choice)Future Educators of America is an organization for students interested in becoming educators. An educator, according to the philosophy of the organization, can be anyone involved in fostering growth and learning in others and themselves. Thus, an educator can by anyone from a parent, to a Sunday school teacher, to a Little League coach, to a classroom teacher. Members of FEA participate in field trips to state colleges to examine and evaluate their programs. Other activities include service projects for the NHS educators and classroom experience at the elementary and/or secondary level. Members also compete in regional, state, and national FEA organizational activities. Everyone is a potential educator.
FFA - Rucker (Meets as Needed - Class Enrollment Required)The FFA is a National Organization that consists of members interested in agri-science/tech activities. The Newton FFA Chapter is involved in numerous yearly activities such as leadership camp, judging contests, kiddy petting zoos, a day at the farm, Adopt-AA-Family, Kansas State Fair outdoor classroom, annual work auction, state and national FFA Conventions, and annual Parent-Member Banquet and Awards. This organization is open to 9th through 12th graders who are enrolled in a vocational agriculture class.
FRENCH CLUB - Kelting (2nd Club Period - Class Enrollment Required)The French Club is available to students who are currently enrolled in French or have taken at least two years of French. French Club permits students to participate in various activities which emphasize French culture and customs, such as Mardi Gras or a Christmas party.
GREENHOUSE CLUB - E. Gunn (2nd Club Period - Choice)The Greenhouse Club at Newton High School will address environmental issues that may impact our school, community, state, nation, or the world. We will organize recycling programs at NHS to include the current recycling of white office paper and explore expanding to other paper products and other materials such as unused or once owned school supplies. The club will have speakers, projects, and field trips related to issues that impact our environment. Greenhouse will work toward educating the community of endangered species, organize letter-writing campaigns to raise awareness, and establish contact with other organizations supporting environment.
HEALTH OCCUPATIONS STUDENT ASSOCIATION HOSA - Mick (During Class - Class Enrollment Required)Any student who is enrolled in Health Careers Seminar is a member if the Health Occupations Student Association Club (HOSA). These students work with school and community projects. They also do fund raising projects throughout the year for the club.
HOBBY CLUB -Fenster (2nd Club Period - Choice)Hobby Club is for those who wish to share their hobbies and promote them to other students. It is a time to share activities and interact with students who have similar hobby interests. Activities may include guest speakers, student presentations, and other gaming and hobby activities.
KEY CLUB -McCloud (Meets Before or After School - Choice)Key Club is a service organization for high school students. It operates under school regulations and draws its membership from the student body. A local Kiwanis club, composed of leading business and professional men and women of the community, sponsors Key Club. Key Club's aim is the development of initiative, leadership ability, and good citizenship practices. Key Club functions not only on the local level, but also on a district and international level. Key Club meets before school or after school and does not conflict with membership in other clubs and activities.
LAW ENFORCEMENT-RELATED OCCUPATIONS - Officer Chad Gay (1st Club Period - Choice)The School Resource Officer at NHS sponsors the Law Enforcement-Related Occupations Club. It is open to all students who might have an interest in pursuing an education or career in law enforcement. It is designed to provide information about the various types of careers available in law enforcement such as local police, state police, FBI, US Marshal, US Attorney, etc. The main activity of the club will be learning information from guest speakers of these agencies to help guide students on the path to pursue a law enforcement career.
MUSIC CLUB - D. Woolery (2nd Club Period - Class Enrollment Required)The Music Club is for the serious music student. You must be currently enrolled in any music class to join. Activities will include presentations about music careers by professionals in the community, performances of a variety of music, opportunities to observe and participate in community music organizations, and an opportunity to attend music performances outside of Newton High School.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY - R. Limon (Meets as needed - Selected)National Honor Society is an organization of selected students. Membership is granted to those junior and senior students selected by a faculty council. Selection is based upon four criteria: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
PEP BAND - Bergman (Before School - Class Enrollment Required)Pep Band is a student music group who provides music for Pep Assemblies and various school events. This club meets before school as announced by the instrumental music teachers. Students must be enrolled in instrumental music to join this club
RAILER AMBASSADORS - G. Bergin (Meets as Needed)Railer Ambassadors is a service organization for Newton High School. The members function in many areas of public relations with the school and community. Ushering at home athletic events, music programs, and plays, the members have an opportunity to greet and assist the patrons of Newton on behalf of the school. Railer Ambassadors participate in one service project for community members during the year.
RAILINERS - (Try-out)Railiners is a selected group of students who promote enthusiasm and spirit through dance routines at pep assemblies and athletic events. Try-outs required.
RAILEROBOTICS - Taylor/Jolliff (Selected)NHS RaileRobotics student participants are selected through an application process each fall. RaileRobotics is part of FIRST, which stands for -- For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology- (www.usfirst.org). Over 800 teams compete nationally during the spring in a game or competition that is different each year. The RaileRobotics team members design, test, and build a robot in six weeks (beginning early in January). Each student is involved in Computer animation, CAD Drafting, Machining, Public Relations, Business Aspects of the team, and web site development and design (www.railerobitcs.com). Participation in RailerRobotics can help students who have an interest in engineering to gain experience working with mentors in the field and may also help them qualify for college scholarships.
RAILROOTERS - Saylor (Meets as needed- During Seminar - Choice)The focus of Rail Rooters is to promote and increase school spirit at Newton High School. Rail Rooters will help cheerleaders in pep assemblies, sign making, and any activities that will enhance school unity and spirit. The club will meet as needed during seminar period, but not on a regular club day. At meetings, members will work with the cheerleaders to learn cheers and chants, to plan skits, and to generate ideas. Members receive a T-shirt with paid dues.
SADD - Gay (STUDENTS AGAINST DESTRUCTIVE DECISIONS - 2nd Club Period - Choice)SADD is a national/state/local organization that promotes awareness of the dangers involved in underage drinking, drug use, drunk driving, tobacco use, and many other potentially destructive decisions students may face. SADD Club promotes non-use of alcohol and drugs for all members, at all times.
SCHOLARS' BOWL - Kelting/ Scott (Before or After School - Choice - sign up with Sponsor - Sept-Feb)Scholars' Bowl is an academic competition based on knowledge of language arts, social sciences, science, math, fine arts, foreign language, and current events. Practice starts in September in mornings and/or afternoons, and competition begins in October and ends in February. High-Q team members are selected from Scholars' Bowl. High-Q is a similar activity, but may be on television.
SENIOR BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS OF AMERICA - M. Rangel (2nd Club Period - Class Enrollment Required)Any student who is enrolled in Business Technology for two hours is a member of the Business Professionals of America Club. These students work with school and community projects. They also do fund raising projects throughout the year for the club.
SKILLS USA - McConnell (Meets During Class)Skills USA (welding) is a student organization for those who are enrolled in first or second year welding. The organization's goals are to develop leadership, teamwork, and respect for the welding vocation. The club fosters the belief of preparing students for the world of work. Students may compete on a state level during the annual Stat.J Skills Championships and may have the opportunity to compete in the national skill contest. Open to juniors and seniors who are enrolled in Welding Technology I and II.
SOCIEDAD HONORARIA HISPANICA - Spanish Honor Society - Gregg (Meets as needed - Selected)This society is a select group of third and fourth year Spanish students. Students are inducted according to Spanish G.P.A. and overall G.P.A. This group forms the core of the Club de Espanol (Spanish Club) leadership.
SOCIETE HONORAIRE DE FRANCAIS - French Honor Society - Kelting (Meets as needed - Selected)This society is a select group of third, fourth and fifth year French students. Students are inducted according to French G.P.A. and overall G.P.A. This group forms the core of the French Club leadership.
STUDENT COUNCIL - Wedel (During Assigned Seminar - Elected)The Newton High School Student Council is an organization of class officers and student body officers. The purposes of Newton High School STUCO are to develop student interest in NHS, promote cooperation between students and staff, develop leadership qualities, and to support high social and academic standards. Members are elected in the spring, freshman in the fall.
SWING DANCE CLUB - C. Conley (1st Club Period - Choice)Swing Dance Club is a club designed for students who want to learn how to swing dance as well as for those who already know how to dance. Often times club members are broken into smaller groups so that they can learn new steps before trying a whole song. Members can learn at their own pace and dance with their friends.
THE TRI-M HONOR SOCIETY - D. Woolery/ K. Woolery (1st Club Period - Selected)The Tri-M Honor Society is the international music honor society for secondary school students that motivates and recognizes musical achievement. The student must be enrolled in a school sponsored music class, be of excellent character, exhibit a good attitude towards teachers and fellow students, be cooperative and helpful in classes and school, maintain a "B" grade point average in music with a "C" average in all other academic subjects. There are individual dues.
VICA AUTO TECHNOLOGY - Unruh (Meets during class)Auto Technology VICA Club is established for the development of leadership, group responsibility, and realizing the importance of your vocation and your own self-worth. This dub is open to auto technology students in Auto I and Auto II. We will meet during class, except for a few special meetings during this year.
VICA BUILDING TRADES - Molgren (Meets during class)Building Trades VICA Club is established to develop leadership abilities, set realistic vocational goals, develop ability to plan and organize activities and give students a chance to grow in their skill area. This club is open to active Building Trades students in Building Trades I and Building Trades II.
VICA MACHINE SHOP - Taylor (Meets during class)The Machine Shop VICA program is comprised of students enrolled in Machine Technology I & II. The Club goals are to develop individual and group leadership skills, build self-confidence and a positive self-image as well as a sense of pride in what they do. Students may have an opportunity to participate in the annual state and national VICA Skills Championships held each spring.
WE CAN - (During Class - Class Enrollment Required)"WE CAN" is an organization of special education students working together to prove that they indeed can do work-related activities competitively with the rest of society. In the "WE CAN" workshop, a variety of projects are manufactured for sale to the public either directly from the classroom or at many area arts and crafts fairs. Profits from these sales are reinvested in the workshop to purchase more materials or to fund activities and field trips for the special education students.
WRITERS ANONYMOUS/CONNECTIONS - McCloud (1st Club Period - Choice)Writers Anonymous gives students a chance to work on their creative writing and have feedback from peers. Students will be encouraged to enter at least one writing contest and learn of other opportunities to be published. This club is for those who have high interest in writing and already keep a journal or plan to start one.
YOUTH ENTREPRENEURS OF KANSAS (Y.E.K.) - (Meets During Class)YEK is an entrepreneurship class club. Any student enrolled in Entrepreneurship (YEK) at NHS is in the club. YEK club will compete in various events against other YEK organizations from across the state of Kansas. The Club will also manage and run the class business. Students are required to write a business plan by the end of the year. Various field trips and guest speakers are available during the year. There is no membership fee.
