The interscholastic sports program in the U.S.D. 373 school district started in August of  1999.  The two middle schools in Newton were combined creating Newton Middle School Railers.  7th and 8th graders participate in interscholastic sports. In 2002 Newton Middle School athletics joined the Walnut Valley League (Get Directions). Railer teams have faired well (Tradition) since joining the WVL competing in volleyball, football, girls tennis and cross country in the fall. Boys basketball, girls basketball and wrestling is in the winter.  In the spring, students can participate in track and boys tennis.
