Special Education Instruction

The cooperative provides special instructional services for students with disabilities based upon their educational needs. Services are provided through a wide range of options. Many students receive most of their academic instruction through support in the general education classroom. Some students are pulled out to a resource setting for work on specific areas. A full-day special program is the most appropriate service for some students.

The cooperative also uses the services of special schools for students whose emotional disability is so severe they cannot learn in a public school setting. For some students who have severe educational/sensory needs the cooperative contracts with nearby districts for services.

Services to children who are identified as gifted are provided by each of the participating districts in the cooperative.

 

Early Childhood Special Education

Early childhood services are designed to meet the needs of preschool children, birth through age five, who have specific handicapping conditions or special needs which impede age-appropriate development. Additional services are provided through home visits on a consultative or direct service basis by a speech-language pathologist, occupational and physical therapists, a psychologist, an audiologist and other professionals.

 

Speech and Language Therapy

Speech language pathologists provide assessments and therapy for articulation problems, language difficulties, stuttering or voice problems. For students meeting eligibility guidelines, speech and language therapy is provided weekly with home programs for parents.

 

Psychological Assessments and Consultations

Psychological services are provided by nationally certified school psychologists. Services include consultations with teachers and parents about the learning and/or behavior needs of an individual student and may include the development of remedial or other intervention strategies. Diagnostic assessments include school screening activities or comprehensive intellectual, educational and emotional testing.

 

School Social Work Services

School social work services include preparing social and developmental histories on children with disabilities, providing group and individual counseling to children and their families, working with children's' living situations (home, school, community) that affects their adjustment in school, and mobilizing school and community resources to optimize students' potential to learn in their educational programs.

 

Occupational and Physical Therapy

Therapy for gross and fine motor impairments which impact a child's education are provided by Occupational Therapists, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants, and Registered Physical Therapists.

 

Audiological Services

Audiologists provide full comprehensive hearing evaluations including pure tone audiometry, impedance testing and otoccoustic emissions.

Assistive Technology and Devices

Harvey County Special Education Cooperative employs an Assistive Technology Resource Specialist who can assess a student's need for assistive devices and train the student and staff in the use of the technology/device.
